What is SEO? A plain explanation for business owners

What is SEO, how does Google find and rank a page, and when do results come? The basics every business owner should know, in plain language.

When someone types "dentist near me" or "corporate website prices" into Google, the results they see aren't in random order. The search engine puts first the pages it thinks give the best answer to the question. SEO is the general name for the work done so that your site is understood correctly in this assessment and can stand out.

What does SEO mean, in short?

SEO stands for "search engine optimisation". The aim is to be more visible in the unpaid (organic) results, that is, without advertising. When the ad budget runs out, the ads stop too; organic visibility depends on the site itself and builds up the more effort you put in.

How does Google find and rank a page?

The process works in three stages:

  • Crawling: Google's bots follow links to find and read pages.
  • Indexing: a page that has been read is saved in Google's huge catalogue. A page that isn't in the index doesn't appear in searches.
  • Ranking: when someone searches, the pages in the index are ordered by how well they answer the question.

The three pillars of SEO

The first is the technical foundation: the site loading fast, displaying properly on a phone, every page having a title and a description, and the site having a sitemap. If these are missing, even the best content may not be read correctly.

The second is content: pages that give a clear, up-to-date answer to the visitor's question. Describing your services, your approach to pricing and frequently asked questions in the words your own customers use pays off here.

The third is trust: signals that show your business is real and reliable, such as links from other sites and the information and reviews on your Google Business Profile.

How long does SEO take to deliver results?

It wouldn't be right to give an exact timeframe for this. A new site can't compete on day one with sites that have been live for a long time; ranking is a result that builds up over time. For highly competitive searches it takes longer; for less competitive searches it takes less time. If you see a quote offering a "guaranteed first page", be cautious; search engines decide the rankings.

What can you do on your own?

  • Create a separate, descriptive page for each of your services.
  • Make sure your phone number, address and opening hours are the same on your site and on your Google Business Profile.
  • Write your customers' frequently asked questions on your site, together with the answers.
  • Keep your content up to date; a closed branch or an old price damages trust.
  • Open your site on your phone and browse it yourself; most visitors come from there.

How does SEO work with us?

Every site we build comes with the technical foundation ready: page titles and descriptions, a sitemap, and fast, pre-generated pages. If you want a content plan and regular page-by-page work, our SEO & GEO service is available separately. In both cases we don't guarantee rankings; what we guarantee is the work itself.
