Website cost: what are you paying for?

What items make up the cost of a website, how does a one-off payment differ from an annual subscription, and what should you ask when getting a quote?

"How much does it cost to build a website?" has no single answer, because very different work is sold under the same name. The price gap between two quotes is often because one counts an item as included while the other prices it separately. The easiest way to understand the cost is to look at the items one by one.

The cost items of a website

  • Domain: your site's address. The annual registration fee varies with the domain extension.
  • Hosting: the server where your site's files live. It's usually paid yearly or monthly.
  • SSL certificate: the padlock in the address bar. Some providers offer it free, others charge for it.
  • Design and setup: how the site looks and getting the pages ready. There's a big difference between a ready theme and a custom design from scratch.
  • Content: texts, photos, product and service details. You can prepare it yourself or have it written.
  • Maintenance and updates: security updates, backups, keeping track of renewals.
  • Extra features: such as multiple languages, appointments, a catalogue and integrations.

One-off payment or annual subscription?

Some quotes deliver the site for a one-off fee; hosting, maintenance and updates are paid separately in later years or are left to the site owner. In the annual subscription model, these items are included in the annual fee and the platform is updated continuously. Which one suits you depends on who will keep your site running. When comparing, look not just at the first year's price but also at what you'll pay in the second and third years.

Questions to ask when getting a quote

  • Are the domain and hosting included in the price, and whose name will they be registered in?
  • What will I pay in the second year?
  • How many design revisions do I get?
  • Will I be able to update the site myself after launch?
  • Who will handle backups and security updates?
  • What happens to my content and my domain if I leave?

How is our price set?

We have three packages, and their prices are written upfront on the Pricing page. The packages are annual, and prices exclude VAT. Hosting, SSL, daily backups, updates and the management panel are included in the package. We connect your domain; the registration fee is not included in the package. We work out together which add-on modules you need and add them to your package. Your price is fixed for the first 12 months. In the following years, the renewal fee is updated in line with the annual inflation rate.
