The search results page hasn't been just a list of links for a long time. Maps, frequently asked questions, product cards, featured answers… Generative search has sped up this trend: most of the page is now full of direct answers.
The upshot: “first place” is losing its old meaning
Even if you're first in the classic list of links, that list may sit far down the screen. So instead of setting “first place” as the goal, you need to think about WHERE you appear on the results page.
The way into the cards is through content
None of this is a “trick”. It's the basic order the system needs to understand your page correctly.
- A frequently asked questions section — written as real questions.
- Your business details marked up with structured data.
- Service and pricing information stated clearly on the page.
- Short, direct answers, not long introductions.
Your site still has a job to do
Even when the answer is given directly, a user at the decision stage checks the source: does it really exist, where is it, how much does it cost, who does it? If the site doesn't answer these questions, being mentioned in the answer doesn't help either.
In short, the site isn't going away; it's changing from a shop window into a reference source.
